  8. These release notes contain the latest information about operating your 
  9. new Thunder/24 for Microsoft Windows graphics card and software.

  15. 1.  Requirements
  16.  
  17.     The Thunder/24 drivers require a 80386 based CPU or better, and are
  18.     fully supported only in Windows 3.1 386 Enhanced mode.  SuperMac
  19.     STRONGLY recommends you make the inexpensive upgrade to Windows 3.1.

  22. 2.  Unnamed floppy prompt
  23.  
  24.     If you attempt to install the Thunder/24 software from your B: floppy,
  25.     you will see the prompt "Please insert the .", due to a bug in the
  26.     Windows SETUP program.  Type "B:\" (or the name of the disk drive 
  27.     holding the Thunder/24 install disk), then click OK.

  30. 3.  Third-party "shell" programs
  31.  
  32.     If you are using a third-party shell program, such as the Norton Desktop
  33.     for Windows, and you experience problems while installing Thunder/24
  34.     software, refer to the detailed section later in this file.

  37. 4.  Applications with difficulties at 24 bits
  38.  
  39.     - The Windows Program Manager will cause errors if you attempt to add the 
  40.       applications to a large group.  See the detailed section later in this 
  41.       file.

  43.     - The Microsoft Visual C++ setup program attempts to create a large group
  44.       and will issue two errors.  See the detailed section later in this file.

  46.     - The "Aquatic Realm" and "Swan Lake" screen saver modules in After Dark
  47.       2.0 display strange bitmaps on devices with 24 bits of color depth.
  48.       Release 2.0a of After Dark solves this problem.  Contact Berkeley
  49.       Systems Technical Support at 1-800-877-5535 for this upgrade.

  55. 5.  Compaq Prosignia with motherboard SCSI
  56.  
  57.     If you intend to install your Thunder/24 in a Compaq Prosignia system
  58.     using a SCSI disk and the on-board SCSI controller, you need to take
  59.     an additional step after installing your Thunder/24 but before actually
  60.     using the board.  Refer to the detailed section later in this file.

  67. This file contains notes and information relating to the Windows driver
  68. installation and usage which might not have made it into the release
  69. documentation.

  72. 1. Restrictions
  73. ---------------
  74. The Thunder/24 drivers require an 80386 CPU or better, and are fully
  75. supported only in Windows 3.1 386 Enhanced mode.  Our experience has shown
  76. that the driver operates correctly in Windows Standard mode only if an 
  77. extended memory manager (such as EMM386 or QEMM) is NOT used. Thunder/24 
  78. will not operate at all in Windows 3.0 Real mode, and neither should you.

  80. Ordinarily, this does not present a problem.  Most 386 users use Enhanced 
  81. mode.  However, when you perform an initial Windows installation, you must
  82. select a VGA device as your initial graphics adapter when performing an 
  83. initial Windows installation.  Then, once Windows has been installed, you 
  84. may use the Thunder/24 Setup utility to change to the Thunder/24 adapter.

  87. 2. Windows 3.0
  88. --------------
  89. SuperMac does not support operation of the Thunder/24 VL card and driver 
  90. under Windows 3.0.

  93. 3. Installation Notes
  94. ---------------------

  96. . Locating the frame buffer window
  97.  
  98.     Thunder/24 VL needs a 16MB window in your memory space to access its 
  99.     frame buffer.  The frame buffer can be located at any 16MB boundary in
  100.     the address space.  The installation program will scan your address space 
  101.     in an attempt to locate available locations.  In our experience, the
  102.     install program rarely has trouble finding a free location; further,
  103.     almost any address higher than your physical memory will usually work.
  104.     
  105.     Because of the nature of the VL bus, however, the installation program 
  106.     is not always able to locate a free spot, and will occasionally diagnose 
  107.     as "free" a location which has some other device.  The following 
  108.     suggestions will assist you in installing the device.
  109.  
  110.     There are relatively few devices which live in the very high address
  111.     space.  In general, you can choose almost any location above your 
  112.     physical RAM.  F000 0000 through FF00 0000 are good choices.  If these
  113.     are unsuccessful, try in this order, 7F00 0000, then 3F00 0000, then
  114.     1F00 0000, then 0F00 0000.

  118.     Because of a bug in the Windows SETUP utility, if you are installing 
  119.     Thunder/24 from your B: floppy, you might be prompted with the 
  120.     particularly unfriendly message "Please insert the ." If you receive 
  121.     this prompt, type in "B:\", or the path to the floppy disk drive 
  122.     holding the Thunder/24 install disk if you are using a different 
  123.     drive.

  125. . Third-party "Shell" Programs
  126.  
  127.     The Thunder/24 installation and setup program communicates with the 
  128.     Windows Program Manager to install the Thunder/24 group and program 
  129.     icons.  Some third-party shells, such as Norton's Desktop for Windows,
  130.     do not fully comply with the Program Manager DDE interface, and will
  131.     produce a system error during the Thunder/24 installation.
  132.  
  133.     To work around this problem, either change the SHELL line in your
  134.     SYSTEM.INI file to read "SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE" and restart Windows, or
  135.     launch PROGMAN.EXE from your preferred shell.  Then, restart the 
  136.     Thunder/24 installation.
  137.

  139. 4. Applications with difficulty at 24 bits per pixel
  140. ----------------------------------------------------
  141.  
  142. Some applications have difficulty operating on a true-color device with 24
  143. bits per pixel.  Here are some of the applications which are known to have
  144. difficulty.
  145.  
  146. . Program Manager
  147.  
  148.     All of the bitmaps for all of the icons within a Program Manager group
  149.     must fit within a single 64K segment.  Because of this, at 24 bits per
  150.     pixel a single group can hold at most 19 icons.  Attempting to add the
  151.     20th icon to a group results in a message box indicating "Insufficient
  152.     Memory to complete the operation."  The only solution to this is to 
  153.     split the group into two smaller groups.
  154.  
  155.     In Windows 3.0, adding a 20th icon to a group crashes Windows.  Here is
  156.     yet another good reason to upgrade to 3.1.
  157.  
  158. . Microsoft Visual C++
  159.  
  160.     As one of the last steps in its setup process, Microsoft Visual C++
  161.     creates a program group with 22 icons.  Because of the Program Manager 
  162.     limitation described above, the addition of the last two icons will 
  163.     generate errors.  Microsoft is aware of this problem and will be issuing 
  164.     a corrective update.
  165.  
  166.     In the interim, one solution is to create another group by hand
  167.     called "Visual C++ Doc", then move (using drag-and-drop) all the 
  168.     documentation related icons to this new group.  Then you may add the two 
  169.     icons which fail: MFCNOTES.HLP and MFCSAMP.HLP, both in the MSVC\HELP 
  170.     directory.

  172. . Berkeley Systems After Dark 2.0
  173.  
  174.     The "Aquatic Realm" and "Swan Lake" screen saver modules in After Dark 
  175.     2.0 display very strange bitmaps on devices with 24 bits of color

  179. . Microsoft MediaPlayer
  180.  
  181.     The Microsoft MediaPlayer application, when playing back Video for Windows
  182.     AVI files, has an option to play video clips at full screen.  This option
  183.     bypasses Windows to force the VGA into a non-standard mode.  Spectrum/24
  184.     will yield the display to the VGA while the clip is playing, but never
  185.     receives a signal when the clip is finished.  Thus, your screen will
  186.     continue to display the final AVI frame forever, and your system will
  187.     appear to be hung.  In fact, Windows is still running, and you should be
  188.     able to hit Alt-F4 and Enter until Windows exits back to DOS.
  189.  
  190.     The interim solution is to only use full-screen mode when you are running
  191.     a VGA driver.  Microsoft is aware of the problem and is working on a
  192.     permanent solution.

  195. 5.  Compaq Prosignia with motherboard SCSI
  196. ------------------------------------------
  197.  
  198. There is a bug in the ROM BIOS for the on-board SCSI controller on all
  199. Compaq Prosignia systems.  This bug results in the upper half of one of
  200. the 80486 32-bit registers (EAX) getting lost during a SCSI hardware 
  201. interrupt, which can occur at any time.  This bug manifests itself as a
  202. General Protection Fault in THUNVL.DRV when the mouse is being moved while
  203. the screen is refreshing at the same time disk activity is going on.
  204.  
  205. Compaq is currently working on update to their ROM BIOS, and has a corrective
  206. patch disk available through their technical support.  Until you receive
  207. that update, you can use the "CPQSCSI.COM" program which is installed in 
  208. the system\supermac subdirectory of your Windows directory by the Thunder/24
  209. installation program.  You need to include a line invoking CPQSCSI in your
  210. AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  You must inform CPQSCSI of the IRQ number that your
  211. SCSI controller is using; you can find out the IRQ number by running your
  212. EISA configuration utility.  The default IRQ is 15; if this is the case
  213. for you, include a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT reading:

  217. This program takes up only a few bytes of memory, and saves and restores
  218. all of the 32-bit registers around each SCSI hardware interrupt.
